According to recent Studies, 2025

According to 2020 Census data, most multiracial Americans live in the western and southern regions of the United States. California, Texas, and Hawaii have the highest total multiracial populations in the country.

States with high multiracial populations

  • Hawaii: As the most racially and ethnically diverse state, Hawaii has the highest percentage of multiracial people. The most common combination there includes Asian and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander heritage.

  • California: This state has the largest overall multiracial population, concentrated in cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Oakland. The most common combination is White and Asian.

  • Texas: The multiracial population in Texas has grown significantly and is concentrated in cities such as Houston, Dallas, and Arlington.

  • Other highly diverse states: Additional states with high concentrations of multiracial residents include Nevada, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey.

Common multiracial combinations and locations

Different regions of the U.S. have varying proportions of specific multiracial combinations:

  • White and American Indian/Alaska Native: This combination is most common in Oklahoma, Alaska, and throughout the northern states.

  • White and Black: This is the most common biracial group nationally and is most prevalent in states like Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

  • White and Asian: This combination is most common in western states like California and Washington.

  • Hispanic and Other Race: Many multiracial individuals who identify as Hispanic or Latino also select "some other race" on census forms. California saw the largest number of these write-in responses in 2020.

The multiracial population is growing

The number of Americans who identify as multiracial is increasing rapidly, driven by rising rates of interracial marriage and a younger population that is more likely to be mixed race. This trend is expected to continue in the coming decades.

Knowing that multiracial populations are growing nationwide, are you curious about the demographics of a specific multiracial combination or the patterns in your local area?
